Watching Wrestling

PSA from a dentist’s daughter

If you have never sat through a wrestling meet it is something you need to do at least once. The sheer will of these gentlemen to go through the pain and agony of being out there alone, trying to pin another human being to the ground. It is applaudable, and somewhat uncomfortable. I usually hold my breath through most of the matches. Luckily they are only six minutes long and in two minute increments. And at the end, they shake hands, they shake the opposing coach’s hand and the referee’s hand.

If you saw these teenagers in the halls of the high school you may never imagine the character that they have inside. When in fact, it is what is on the inside that allows them to put themselves out there in the most vulnerable way.

I would challenge all of you to not make snap judgements, become aware of your surroundings and raise each other up. Look for the good in people and see past the bad. Don’t look for defining moments in life, those moments have already happened. If you are out on the mat in a singlet trying not to get pinned, you are already there.

Don’t be afraid to fail. Know that a book is more than its cover. Doing the hard things will make a path where doing anything will become easier. One step at a time. Be patient with yourself. And just try a little bit harder.
