PSA from the dentist’s daughter
I laughed when my youngest boy was asked on a survey many years ago “What are you afraid of?” He answered with “clowns, mimes, mirrors, windows, hallways, curtains, doors that are open, doors that are closed, the dark, being alone, well mom, just about everything”. I assure you things have gotten better, for both of us.
As author Brene Brown states “Vulnerability is not fear, it is the birthplace of everything we are hungry for”. Why do people use vulnerability as a bad word? If we are not always vulnerable then we are not taking chances. Every risk we take means we have courage to be there when the odds are clearly unknown.
“Vulnerability is not weakness. It is our greatest measure of courage”. Brene Brown states. It is those moments in our life, that are out of our control in many ways, that are the catalyst or ignition for some of our greatest achievements.
It is so evident in my life, now when I go through hard things, I am not as scared anymore. I can open my mind and know that with this current impediment I can anticipate the greatness and the spark and the growth that will occur.
I hope I can pass this trait on to my children, onward and upward no matter what. Take each day one at a time and don’t be bogged down in “I can’t” or “I am scared”. Be inspired by past accomplishments and let it go. Be inspired by “What IF?” And act on that!
