Rimrocked

PSA from a dentist’s daughter

Rimrocked is a term meaning that you are in a very precarious and tenuous place. It is an unfortunate place that you have climbed up to and from which you are surprisingly too frightened to descend or turn back. This term is most frequently used in the back country where climbers find it easy to scramble up ladder-like layers of rock…but are unable to return back down. When one becomes so unnerved that they are stuck, they are “rimrocked.”

While I have my midlife epiphany (better than crisis right?) I realized that I don’t ever want to be stuck in a position where I have no way out, no alternative, no escape. You may run into people that can’t leave a job because they don’t want to give up their salary or their vacation time or what not even though they are clearly unhappy. Or an unhealthy relationship where they feel they have invested to much, it will be too hard, where they fear failure.

While I am creating a life on my own terms I have realized I am becoming happier and more satisfied everyday. I can also slowly see my emotions reflecting positively in the people I love around me. Not that any of this is easy, but I have realized that you can live life with less. As Bernadette Peters said in The Jerk, its not about the money, its about the stuff right? But I have found living with less stuff is even more rewarding. Our stuff is consuming our energy and robbing us of health and satisfaction.

Don’t trade your hopes and dreams for compromises, don’t settle for what other people tell you that you should be doing. Only you know your heart. I encourage you to go all out. Put other people first. Hug more people and smile more often.

Spread kindness and love, even to people who may not deserve it. Learn to say no, but also learn to say yes. Everyday push yourself out of your comfort zone – just once.

Don’t wait for the right time to make changes. Think out of the box. Be a light, be a leader. Don’t wait for those defining moments to come, they have already happened. Its always darkest before the light.
